High-Speed Locking Cylinder

This article discusses a new product known as a locking cylinder, which is used to hold loads stationary when a machine is shutdown, as well as a fail safe for counterbalance applications. This new product is an improved version because of its ability to lock in both directions and deliver the same holding strength in both extension and retraction. Additionally, a larger braking surface area allows this product to handle high-speed operations. The braking is done using the wedge principle and steel ball combination. Two rows of precision steel balls provide high-locking power that can stop loads from speeds of 1,000 mm/s. Also, a floating taper-ring assembly gives an improved alignment. Other improvements, such as separating the brake mechanism from the air line, also help to improve performance and extend the operational life of the cylinder. This product is sold as a cartridge that simplifies replacement while in the field. Targeted applications include intermediate stops, emergency stops, and drop prevention in the material handling, automation, and specialty machinery industries.   Read the full article at Design News.
