Management vs. Luck

This article discusses some current management trends in mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineers are familiar with the problems that can occur when trying to update design plans. To prevent costly errors everyone must be working with the same plans, so it is critical that an update is received quickly and unanimously. Outsourcing compounds this problem by spreading out the workforce. The article also points out that the development cycles are shrinking while complexity is increasing. This increases the likelihood that frequent updates will be necessary during the project. Another common concern in engineering companies is maintaining good data management practices. This involves using a system that is powerful enough to handle the needs of each department, flexible enough so a design can be altered in response to customer requirements, and one that keeps frequent backups of work. While most will agree that good data management is important, very few of us have time to implement any significant schemes. Things to keep in mind when determining a solution for data management are keeping it simple and ensuring that standard data formats are used so that data can be shared.   Read full article at Design News.
