Medical equipment has now joined the recycling movement

A movement to recycle used medical equipment is gaining popularity. Hospitals have been attempting to reduce their waste up to 50% by 2010. As part of this movement, medical equipment is being recycled, reused through donation, reprocessed, and remanufactured to extend the useable lifetime of the equipment. By increasing the lifetime of this equipment instead of disposing of it, waste is reduced along with cost and environmental concerns. Some hospitals are selling their equipment, which provides added revenue to the budget via third-party resellers or Internet sites that have been set up for this purpose. Of course, there are several factors to consider before selling: the condition of the used equipment, the financial benefits to selling, liability concerns, staff time, state regulations, etc. Another option is to send the used medical equipment to developing countries where it is needed.
